    Saturday, June 4
    5:30 – 7:30 pm
    $25 member / $40 nonmember
Instructor: Stuart Coombs, Wildland Urban Interface Specialist
Notes: For ages 16 and up

    Description:

Fire can be a destructive force, but it can also be a positive tool for land management and habitat restoration. Texas A&M Forest Service’s Wildfire Mitigation and Prevention Department will use 3D Wildfire Simulation Technology to host an interactive presentation about assessing wildfire risk in Southeastern Texas, managing local landscapes to account for fire, and the benefits of prescribed fire for improving landscape health. Learn how to be “firewise” in protecting your home and land from wildfires and about the role of fire and fire prevention in the Arboretum’s habitat restoration plans.

After the discussion, we’ll gather around the 3D Wildfire Simulation Table for a Memorial Park tactical wildfire scenario. The “simtable” allows us to look at fire at the neighborhood and landscape scale and will show the importance of wildfire mitigation and prevention through collaborative planning efforts.

Instructor bio: Stuart has been with Texas A&M Forest Service since August of 2014. Prior to that he worked for the Fishlake National Forest, Utah Forestry Fire and State Lands and Dixie National Forest in wildland fire and fuels management. He also owned and operated a small business specializing in wildfire mitigation and invasive species removal. He has a B.S. in Environmental Studies from the University of Utah.
