Smokey Bear Celebrates 75 Years of Wildfire Prevention

ABILENE, Texas — Texas A&M Forest Service, in cooperation with Abilene Fire Department, is hosting a celebration in honor of Smokey Bear’s 75th birthday and his wildfire prevention message. The event will be held Friday, Aug. 9, from 11a.m. to 2p.m. at Nelson Park Festival Gardens, 2070 Zoo Ln, Abilene, TX.

Free festivities will include readings of Smokey’s story, refreshments, meet and greets with Smokey Bear, and activities for the whole family.

“Spreading the message of wildfire prevention is important, especially as conditions transition toward being favorable for the start and spread of wildfires,” said Tyler Brown, Wildland Urban Interface Specialist with Texas A&M Forest Service.

Nine out of ten wildfires are caused by humans, and Smokey Bear has been reminding people of what they can do to help prevent wildfires for the last 75 years.

Come out to meet Smokey Bear, as well as some of your local responders, and help them celebrate.
