  • STATE FORESTS AND ARBORETUMS: MANASSAS MIMOSA

The Battle of Second Manassas took place in August 1862 when Robert E. Lee sent “Stonewall” Jackson’s corps to face General John Pope, who had a strategic supply base nearby.

After days of attack and counterattack, Jackson was reinforced by General Longstreet and their victory opened the way for the South’s first invasion of the North.

The Manassas Mimosa stands over the now silent battlefields in Manassas, Va. Each year, seeds are hand-picked to produce direct-offspring trees, of which tree at the Ruth Bowling Nichols Arboretum is one.
