      Urban Tree Canopy

    Urban Tree Canopy

Urban Tree Canopy (UTC) is the layer of leaves, branches, and stems or trees that cover the ground when viewed from above. These trees, all public and private trees in the community, comprise the Urban Forest and provide valuable services and benefits.

The UTC application displays predicted urban growth areas, UTC for selected communities and models future UTC based on management policy. Previously we used leaf-on aerial imagery from Texas Natural Resources Information System (TNRIS) to map the canopy, but now with the availability of LiDAR data, we have been updating the communities with more accurate and new UTC data. The top part of the image displays a profile of the LiDAR point data in San Marcos. The bottom part represents a section of the mapped urban tree canopy.
