New, lightweight brush truck takes Bon Wier VFD where others can’t go

Feb. 8, 2016 -BON WEIR, Texas — Bon Wier Volunteer Fire Department received a
$100,000 cost-share grant from Texas A&M Forest Service that helped to purchase a 2016 Ford
F550 brush truck.

The vehicle was recently put into service to respond to a hay field fire. The truck has the ability
to get off-road to safely respond where larger equipment cannot go.

“Wildland fires are our most common response calls,” said Bon Wier VFD Captain Sean Mills.

“Most of our vicinity is a mix of woodland and farmland, making this the ideal apparatus for our
department.”

Volunteer firefighters operate 85 percent of the fire departments in Texas. This year TFS will
pass approximately $24.3 million to VFDs across the state. The grants aid in purchasing
equipment and obtaining vital firefighter training, giving them greater capabilities to protect life
and property in their communities.
