James Cousins recognized with 2025 Lone Star State Crew Leadership Award

Texas A&M Forest Service has recognized James Cousins, Resource Specialist III in the Huntsville office, as the 2025 recipient of the Lone Star State Crew Leadership Award.

The Lone Star State Type II Initial Attack Hand Crew is composed of highly trained individuals who respond to wildfires in remote areas often inaccessible by equipment. While pre-positioned for wildfire response, the crew also works on fuel reduction and restoration projects across the state.

Each year, the crew members nominate a peer who demonstrates exceptional leadership during the previous fire season. The award, also known as the Lead by Example Award, recognizes a team member who exemplifies dedication, professionalism and service.

Two firefighters navigate a forested area with burnt trees and underbrush. They carry equipment and follow a fire hose. The scene is misty, and the ground is scorched. The atmosphere is tense but calm, indicating that a fire has been managed.
A group of people in yellow and green protective clothing are constructing a firebreak in a forested area. They are using tools to clear debris from the forest floor. Smoke is visible in the background. Trees surround the scene, and leaves cover the ground.

Cousins has been a core member of the crew for more than five years, responding to wildfires across Texas and nationally. According to his peers, his character, commitment and leadership consistently set the standard for others.

He is known for supporting teammates, mentoring new members and ensuring the crew is prepared and confident in their roles, regardless of his position on the roster. His leadership was especially evident during operations in Alaska this past summer, where he demonstrated dedication, respect and integrity under challenging conditions.

Crew members describe Cousins as someone who leads by example, uplifts morale and brings energy and extensive knowledge to every assignment.

The Lone Star State Crew continues to play a critical role in wildfire response and mitigation efforts across Texas and beyond.
