DIME BOX, Texas — The Dime Box Volunteer Fire Department of Lee County received a $110,000
grant through the Texas A&M Forest Service Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program to
purchase a small brush truck.
The truck will be used to fight wildland fires as well as traffic control and general response. The truck is
fully equipped to be an initial attack response vehicle.
Rick Foster, a board member of the Dime Box Volunteer Fire Department, said the grant program was
instrumental in adding a dependable piece of equipment to the department’s fleet. The truck will help in
recruitment of volunteers while improving response time and increasing firefighter safety, he said.
The truck has already proven valuable to the department after being used to respond to a hay baler fire, a
structure fire, a traffic accident and a funeral procession.
As a member agency of the Texas A&M University System, Texas A&M Forest Service administers the
Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program and is committed to protecting lives, property, and
natural resources. The Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program is funded by the Texas
Legislature and provide cost-share funding to rural volunteer fire departments for the acquisition of
firefighting vehicles, fire and rescue equipment, protective clothing, dry hydrants, computer systems and
firefighter training.
