Reforestation

Reforestation is the process of restoring or replanting trees on land that has been clearcut or destroyed by natural disasters. It is an essential part of sustainable forest management and caring for generations to come. All modern production forests are the result of planting done 30-40 years ago.

Inadequate reforestation has historically been an issue in Texas forests, resulting in over or understocked stands with dense understory regeneration that can have severe impacts on the landowner’s future income potential.

A proper reforestation plan will increase future income and overall forest health.

Advances in sustainable forest management practices and improved tree genetics through selective breeding have increased overall forest yields by 15 – 25% per acre while reducing the length of rotation. Rotation is the length of time from planting until final harvest.

Our district foresters can assist you with making informed decisions by providing technical guidance on building a reforestation plan for your property. They can help work through the best trees species to plant, advise on the most beneficial site preparation practices to use, and help navigate ordering seedlings.

East Texas tree planting guidelines

Whether you’re planting a few trees or millions, our reforestation guidelines will give you proper planting techniques. These are the same technical guidelines and standards our foresters use to ensure that all trees are planted correctly.

Tree planting in Central Texas

Trees planted in Central Texas may not be for production purposes but still serve as valuable food and shelter for wildlife, stabilize soils, increase aesthetics, and provide recreational opportunities. To ensure their success and assess the potential failure points follow these guidelines.
