May 16, 2016 — FULTON, Texas — Fulton Volunteer Fire Department has enhanced its fire
service capacities with the help of a $20,000 grant administered by Texas A&M Forest Service.
The grant, part of Texas A&M Forest Service’s Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance
Program went toward purchasing a new slip-on unit for one of the department’s existing trucks.
A slip-on unit is a completely self-contained firefighting system designed for a pick-up truck or
custom-built vehicle platform. It is used in wildland firefighting as well as structure and
automobile fires.
“This new unit adds more arsenal to our fleet. It is replacing a tank and pump that was on a truck
we already had,” Fulton VFD Chief Rickey McLester said. “It has a 750-gallon water tank, a 10
gallon foam tank and an increase in the pump capacity. The unit allows for better water
efficiency when using the foam, and we don’t have to refill the tank as often because of its water
capacity.”
Texas A&M Forest Service is committed to protecting lives and property through the Rural
Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program, a cost-share program funded by the Texas State
Legislature and administered by Texas A&M Forest Service. This program provides funding to
rural VFDs for the acquisition of firefighting vehicles, fire and rescue equipment, protective
clothing, dry hydrants, computer systems, and firefighter training.
