Highlands VFD can now battle wildfires with new slip on unit

Feb. 4, 2016 — HIGHLANDS, Texas — Highlands Volunteer Fire Department purchased a
new slip-on unit with an $18,000 grant from Texas A&M Forest Service.

“This is a replacement unit that is more flexible, has an auto start, a self-contained fuel tank, 200
gallon water tank and more discharge outlets than our previous unit” says Highlands VFD Fire
Chief Harvey Little.

Highlands VFD donated their older slip-on unit, which was still serviceable, to another VFD that
did not have one.

“Highlands VFD is in an area of rapid development, and they are constantly getting wildfire calls
in the expanding neighborhoods,” said Texas A&M Forest Service Regional Fire Coordinator
Jeremy Wagner. “The slip-on unit was mounted on a new Chevy chassis creating a new brush
truck that will be a great resource to the department and community.”

Volunteer firefighters operate 85 percent of the fire departments in Texas. This year, Texas A&M
Forest Service will pass approximately $24.3 million to VFDs across the state. The grants aid in
purchasing equipment and obtaining vital firefighter training, giving them greater capabilities to
protect life and property in their communities.
