Jan. 22, 2016 — BRECKENRIDGE, Texas — Hubbard Creek VFD recently added a converted 1989 M978
Oshkosh military truck to their fleet. The addition was made possible through the Department of Defense
Firefighter Property Program administered by Texas A&M Forest Service.
“One stipulation for receiving the truck was to paint it a non-military color,” said Hubbard Creek VFD Fire
Chief Danny Stueart. “We painted the truck to resemble the Texas Flag.”
This unit will benefit Hubbard Creek VFD by supplementing water supply due to few fire hydrants in the area.
It has the capacity to transport a large quantity of water to the fire, especially when fighting wildland fires.
“We will have someone from Dyess Air Force Base come to give safety training on how to effectively use the
unit,” said Chief Stueart.
The DoD Firefighter Property Program provides excess military equipment to fire departments and emergency
service providers. Launched in Texas in 2005, this program has released over 300 retired military trucks to
VFDs across the state to help them better protect lives and property. The USDA Forest Service oversees the
program; Texas A&M Forest Service picks up the vehicle from a military installation, performs necessary
repairs, and delivers it to the Volunteer Fire Department at no cost to them.
