Texas A&M Forest Service to offer prescribed fire workshop for West Texas landowners

Texas A&M Forest Service is hosting a prescribed fire landowner workshop in Junction, Texas, on Saturday, Oct. 18.

The workshop is designed to assist landowners, prescribed burn managers and prescribed burn associations in West Texas with fundamentals, tactics and best practices of using prescribed fire as a land management tool.

Continuing education unit credits for pesticide applicators license and six hours of Texas Department of Agriculture continuing fire training credits are available through the workshop.

“Continuing education in prescribed fire is essential for landowners and professionals,” said Kayla Driver, Texas A&M Forest Service Wildland Urban Interface Coordinator. “Doing so provides insights to proven research and experience and builds a strong prescribed fire culture.”

Available sessions at the workshop include prescribed fire history, the use of prescribed fire to meet land management objectives, how to become involved in a prescribed burn association, prescribed fire laws and regulations, smoke management, contingency planning and coordinating with local fire authorities.

Instruction will be led by Texas A&M Forest Service and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department prescribed fire experts and the Upper Llanos Prescribed Burn Association.

The workshop will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Texas Tech University Junction Campus at 254 Red Raider Lane, Junction, Texas 76849.
