Walnut Springs Volunteer Fire Department receives $20,000 grant

BOSQUE, Texas — Walnut Springs VFD now has a new slip-on unit to help fight brush fires. Thanks
to a Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance grant through Texas A&M Forest Service.

A slip-on unit is designed to become a fast initial-attack firefighting unit. It is used in wildland
firefighting as well as structure and auto fires, and is a complete self-contained firefighting apparatus
designed for a pickup truck or custom-built vehicle platform.

The unit has a 400-gallon water tank and a 10-gallon foam injection system.

The addition of the foam with water helps give the firefighter a quicker knock down with fewer flare
ups.

“Our department is very happy to have received a grant from Texas A&M Forest Service to help
purchase a much-needed replacement for an older unit,” said Walnut Springs VFD Fire Chief Gary
Anderson. “All of the recent rain has created a lot of fuel for grass fires, this unit has already been used
to respond to 10 grass fires.”

Walnut Springs VFD has been serving their area since 1978. The department currently has 14
volunteers dedicated to serving and protecting their rural community.

Texas A&M Forest Service is committed to protecting lives and property through the Rural Volunteer
Fire Department Assistance Program, a cost-share program funded by Texas State Legislature and
administered by Texas A&M Forest Service. This program provides funding to rural Volunteer Fire
Departments for the acquisition of firefighting vehicles, fire and rescue equipment, protective clothing,
dry-hydrants, computer systems and firefighter training.,
