December 12, 2016 — WOODSON, Texas — Woodson Volunteer Fire Department has
enhanced its fire service capabilities with the help of a $12,973 grant from Texas A&M Forest
Service’s Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program. They purchased a new slip-on
unit for one of the department’s existing trucks.
A slip-on unit is designed to be a fast initial-attack firefighting unit, durable and highly mobile. It
is used in wildland firefighting as well as structure and auto fires.
“This slip-on unit is a new addition to our department; it is the first new slip-on that we have ever
had,” said Woodson VFD Chief Brady Miller. “It has a 400-gallon water tank and a 10-gallon
foam tank that was installed onto the back of a 2007 one-ton dually Ford pickup truck that will
be used as our first out vehicle.”
Woodson VFD, established in 1975, serves a population of approximately 500 people in over
921 square miles of Throckmorton County.
Texas A&M Forest Service is committed to protecting lives and property through the Rural
Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program, a cost-share program funded by the Texas State
Legislature and administered by Texas A&M Forest Service. This program provides funding to
rural VFDs for the acquisition of firefighting vehicles, fire and rescue equipment, protective
clothing, dry hydrants, computer systems, and firefighter training.
