Prescribed Fire

Prescribed fire is the planned application of low-intensity fire to the landscape by fire and fuel specialists to maintain healthy, resilient landscapes.

Prescribed fire creates sustainable forests and ecosystems. It also reduces hazardous fuel (a buildup of twigs, grasses, and pine straw), which reduces the effects and potential of wildfire.

The land management tool uses strategic plans in accordance with applicable laws, policies, and regulations to meet specific land management objectives outlined in land management and forest stewardship plans.

Conducting a prescribed fire is a vital tool for managing land and promoting ecological health, but it requires careful planning and execution to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Texas A&M Forest Service and prescribed fire

We conduct prescribed fires on State Forests and state lands to reduce hazardous fuels. This protects surrounding communities and provides wildland training opportunities for local cooperators like fire departments and natural resource agencies.

Our prescribed burn managers hold NWCG Prescribed Burn Boss Type 2 qualifications, and all participating personnel hold NWCG Firefighter Type 2 qualifications.

We support prescribed fire implementation on Texas land by certified and insured prescribed burn managers.
