Camilla Twin Harbors VFD receives grant to better protect and serve

The Camilla Twin Harbors Volunteer Fire Department is now better equipped
to serve and protect the community after adding a new small brush truck to its response fleet with
help from a grant administered by the Texas A&M Forest Service.

“We were ecstatic when we got approval for our grant,” Fire Chief Cort Humes said. “We don’t have
the funding to buy a brand new truck ourselves. A lot of our funding comes from donations.”

The department was previously operating with outdated equipment.

“Before receiving this truck we were using a 1990 model truck,” Humes said. “This truck will help a
lot with the brush fires we respond to.”

The department responds to calls in its own service district, but also provides mutual aid to
neighboring areas, sometimes 15 miles out from their own station according to Humes.

The grant was acquired through the Rural VFD Assistance Program, which helps chartered, nonprofit volunteer fire departments obtain firefighting vehicles, fire and rescue equipment, protective
clothing, dry-hydrants, computer systems, and firefighter training.

TFS passes approximately $12.8 million along to volunteer fire departments across the state every
year, helping them purchase equipment to better protect lives and property.
