Through a community-wide effort to raise wildfire awareness and reduce the risk of wildfires, the City of Rosser, Texas earned national recognition as a Firewise Community. Texas A&M Forest Service representatives were proud to take part in the celebration.

Rosser earned the National Fire Protection Association’s Firewise Communities distinction by working closely with the Rosser Volunteer Fire Department and TFS. By dedicating time and investing resources, Rosser is safer from wildfires and provides educational outreach for its residents.

Texas has 64 active Firewise Communities. Rosser is the first community in Kaufman County to receive the Firewise recognition, and is helping to set a precedence for communities to work together and take ownership of protecting their homes from the threat of wildfire.

“It’s not a question of if, but when the next major wildfire will occur. Wildfires can happen anywhere and at any time,” TFS State Firewise Liaison Nick Harrison said. “Firewise Communities and Firewise practices are a process that empowers neighbors to work together in reducing their wildfire risks.”

A Firewise recognition ceremony was held on Nov. 17 at the Rosser VFD. Representatives from TFS, Rosser VFD, the Firewise Committee and the City of Rosser attended the event.
