Stewardship

Forest Stewardship is the proactive management of forest resources to improve the overall health and productivity of the local ecosystem.

Responsible landowners work to increase the economic, environmental, and social benefits offered by their forest through knowledgeable and careful management. They also ensure those resources will be available for future generations to enjoy.

Our Forest Stewardship Program offers you the assistance of knowledgeable experts so you can make responsible decisions regarding the management of your property. Through developing a stewardship or management plan, they’ll help you tailor your efforts to best fulfill your management goals, whether that be in the prioritization of timber production, improvement of wildlife habitat, conserving soil and water quality, or even provision of better aesthetic and recreational value. Many of our management recommendations will likely result in improvement in multiple or even all those potential goals at once.

Ask us any of your forestry-related questions by phone, email, or through visiting one of our district offices. On request, we can also perform site visits to your property and advise on questions you may have regarding forest pests, sick trees, or other pressing concerns. Landowner visits can take anywhere from thirty minutes to four hours, depending on the needs of the landowner. Time from the first landowner visit to delivery of a new management or stewardship plan can vary anywhere from a couple weeks to one or two months, depending on the workload of our foresters at a given time of year and the complexity of the associated plan.

We offer our services, including the writing of Forest Stewardship plans, at no cost to the landowner.
