Wildfire and incident response training

As the official signatory of the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) for the State of Texas, we are committed to ensuring that wildfire and incident response training delivered in the state meets national standards.

Our responsibility is to ensure that individuals receive qualifications that reflect their knowledge and experience. Enabling them to safely and effectively perform their roles when deployed to wildfires and all-hazard incidents.

Our goal is to support and empower local fire departments across Texas by providing the skills, knowledge, and tools needed. Through hands-on training, educational resources, and collaborative efforts, we work together to enhance preparedness and improve wildfire response across the state.

Training opportunities

In line with our mission, we offer nationally accredited training for local, state, and federal partners throughout Texas.

These training programs, which include courses accredited by both the NWCG and Texas A&M Forest Service, are designed to prioritize safety while developing the skills of wildland firefighters. Our training uses up-to-date techniques, modern tools, and expert instructors to prepare responders for efficient and safe action during wildfires and other emergency incidents.

We offer training through single-course delivery, multi-course events, and our Texas Interagency Wildfire and Incident Management Academies. These academies have been bringing together emergency responders from all backgrounds since 1998, providing them with opportunities to expand their skills and advance their careers.

Our academies offer a comprehensive and well-rounded learning experience. We provide a full spectrum of courses. From foundational wildland firefighter training to specialized courses for high-level, supervisory roles. The academies aim to foster a diverse learning environment, promoting professional development across all levels of emergency response.

We coordinate two major academies each year:

  • East Texas Interagency Wildfire and Incident Management Academy – Held every May in the Lufkin area
  • Capital Area Interagency Wildfire and Incident Management Academy – Held every October in the Bastrop area

These academies offer critical training opportunities and are an important part of our ongoing efforts to build a strong, capable wildfire response community.
