Bon Wier Volunteer Fire Department accepted a 2005 firefighting apparatus
offered through the Helping Hands Program administered by Texas A&M Forest Service.
“It is good to have a dependable truck that will hold 750-gallons of water and can carry up to eight
firefighter,” said Bon Wier VFD Assistant Chief Sean Mills.
The truck will primarily be used for structure fires.
“About 25 to 35 percent of our calls are for structure fires,” said Mills. “This apparatus will be very
useful for those types of fires and also when we are called on for mutual aid.”
State Representative James White was present for the truck delivery and spoke encouraging words to
the department and expressed his appreciation for Texas A&M Forest Service providing the truck.
Assistant Chief Mills, Fire Chief Curbey Schmidtt and 12 volunteers serve a 62-square-mile area and
value this fleet addition that will help increase their capacity to protect life and property.
Since 1997, the Helping Hands Program has received more than $40.5 million in donated equipment
that is transferred at no cost, to volunteer fire departments. Texas A&M Forest Service is grateful to
donors for their participation in supplying equipment for distribution to volunteer fire departments.
